New GA-06 Poll: McBath Leads Handel By 3 Points In Rematch

Aug 27, 2020

Despite strong name ID, voters are sour on Handel

Biden leads Trump 52-45%

A new poll of voters in Georgia, commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by GQR, shows Representative Lucy McBath with a three point lead over Karen Handel, 50-47%. Joe Biden is leading President Trump by seven points, 52-45%. Click here to see the polling memo.

According to the findings, Handel’s record on corporate special interests drives voters away from her. At the outset, voters say the phrase “too close to corporate special interests” describes Handel better than McBath by an 18-point margin. After voters hear about Handel’s record and connections to special interest money, this difference grows to 40 points, with 54% of voters saying that phrase describes Handel better. Despite a strong name ID (84%), voters know Karen Handel and dislike her. Among independents, Handel’s negatives outweigh her positives by 8 points. The poll confirmed once again that the issue of money in politics is a potent message in the district.

“Georgia voters had a front row seat to Karen Handel’s short time in Congress and they clearly didn’t like what they saw,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “Aside from the district becoming more favorable to Democrats, Karen Handel’s past connections to corporate special interests continue to haunt her this cycle. Meanwhile, Congresswoman McBath continues to earn the support of Georgia voters because she’s kept her promise to put people first and take on the corrupt special interests like the NRA.”

GQR surveyed 401 likely general election voters in GA-06 from August 11-16, 2020. The margin of error is +/- 4.9%.
