Greenfield leads Ernst 49-47 percent
Issue of corruption will play a defining role in the Iowa Senate race
A new poll of Iowa voters, commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and Let America Vote (LAV) and conducted by GQR, shows Theresa Greenfield leading Senator Joni Ernst, 49-47 percent. The poll reveals that the Iowa Senate race is fertile ground for Greenfield to take on and defeat Ernst by exposing Ernst’s ties to corporate special interests.

Beyond the head-to-head, Senator Ernst’s approval is at 35 percent, despite boasting a 93 percent name recognition. The results also show that voters are aware that Ernst has done little during her tenure to “make ‘em squeal” in Washington. By a 20-point margin, voters say the phrase “too close to corporate special interests” describes Ernst well. That record erodes her image among key swing voting groups, particularly independents and moderates, who drop support for Ernst after hearing how she has become part of the status quo in Washington.
“Senator Ernst promised Iowans that she would take on the Washington establishment and ‘make ‘em squeal’, but after five years in the Senate, she’s become a part of the problem,” said Tiffany Muller, president of ECU and LAV. “Theresa Greenfield is listening to Iowans and their concerns about corruption and she’s taking action. On top of refusing to take corporate PAC money for her campaign, she’s making ending political corruption her top priority. This will be a potent issue for voters and we look forward to helping Theresa get her message out while exposing Senator Ernst’s record.”
GQR surveyed 800 likely general election voters in Iowa from June 23-28, 2020. The margin of error is +/- 3.46%.
ECU and LAV endorsed Theresa Greenfield in July 2019 because of her commitment to ending corruption in Washington. In her first major policy announcement, Greenfield released a bold and comprehensive plan to end political corruption by getting big money out of politics and passing legislation that will ban dark money and corporate PAC money.
