New NBC News Poll Reaffirms “Threats to Democracy” as Top Issue for Voters

Sep 19, 2022

Yet another poll reaffirms threats to democracy as a top issue for voters heading into November.

A new NBC News poll found:

  • “Like in August, respondents in this latest NBC News poll say the most important issues facing the country are “threats to democracy” (20% of voters picked that as their as number one issue), the cost of living (18%), jobs and the economy (16%) and immigration and the situation at the border (12%).”

  • 40% of voters favor Democrats for protecting democracy compared to 33% favoring Republicans.

While voters are overwhelmingly worried about the existential threats to our democracy, new Washington Post and New York Times reports revealed that Republican candidates for the highest levels of government have refused to commit to accepting this year’s election results, including candidates in top races:

  • Ted Budd (NC-SEN)
  • Ron Johnson (WI-SEN)
  • J.D. Vance (OH-SEN)
  • Blake Masters (AZ-SEN)
  • Marco Rubio (FL-SEN)
  • Don Bolduc (NH-SEN)
  • Doug Mastriano (PA-GOV)
  • Tudor Dixon (MI-GOV)
  • Kari Lake (AZ-GOV)

The NBC poll reaffirms similar results over the last several months about voters’ increasing concern about the extremist threats to our democracy, including the influence of money in politics:

  • Navigator Research: 70% of independent voters are concerned about the possibility of throwing out election results if Republicans take power and 69% of voters are concerned about special treatment for corporations if the GOP takes control.

  • Reuters: 58% of voters think the MAGA movement is a threat to democracy.

  • CBS News: 72% of Americans think democracy is under threat; 86% of those attribute that to the amount of money corrupting our system.

  • Quinnipiac: 74% of voters think American democracy is under threat.

  • NBC News: Threats to democracy is the top issue for voters heading into midterms (August 2022).
