NEW POLL: 61% Support Independent Investigation into Trump-Russia Ties

May 15, 2017

Majority of Americans believe there was Russian involvement

WASHINGTON, DC – A new poll commissioned by End Citizens United shows that a large majority of Americans support an independent investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 Presidential election. The poll, conducted by PPP, also finds that Americans oppose President Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

“Americans’ faith in our system and government is at an all time low. They believe that a foreign entity interfered in our elections – threatening the very foundation of our democracy,” said Tiffany Muller, president and executive director of End Citizens United. “Now President Trump has fired the person responsible for overseeing this investigation. The American people are demanding an independent investigation to get real answers and restore faith and integrity to our system. Our members will continue to call on Congress to support an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this.”

Key takeaways from the poll include:

  • By a margin of 61-30%, Americans support an independent investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 Presidential election

  • 52% of Americans believe there was Russian involvement, 34% don’t

  • 51% oppose Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, 41% supports

  • 56% disapprove of Trump’s job performance while only 39% approve. (This is the highest disapproval rating PPP has recorded since Trump has taken office.)

End Citizens United and Every Voice have launched ‘Independent Investigation Now,’ a national campaign, pressuring senators to call for an independent investigation to determine if President Trump and his campaign colluded with Russia to rig the election. The effort will include paid advertising, grassroots action, earned media, and polling.

The campaign kicked-off with digital ads, petitions, and calls to senate offices that target eight Republicans, including: Jeff Flake (AZ), Dean Heller (NV), Steve Daines (MT), Ron Johnson (WI), Rob Portman (OH), Pat Toomey (PA), Susan Collins (ME), and Lisa Murkowski (AK).

End Citizens United, a grassroots-powered reform group with three million members nationwide, was established in March 2015 to counter the disastrous effects of the Citizens United decision and protect the integrity of our elections against unlimited and undisclosed money as well as foreign influence.
