Mar 02, 2021

83% of Americans support the historic reform bill

A new poll, commissioned by End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund and conducted by Global Strategy Group and ALG Research, shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans across party lines support the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1)––a critical reform package to get dark money out of politics, crack down on corruption, protect voting rights and ensure elections are accurate.

The poll found that 83 percent of Americans across party lines support the For the People Act. Specific reforms within the For the People Act are hugely popular, with most provisions receiving 90 percent or higher in support. The poll also found that passing the For the People Act increases voters’ trust in Democrats to deliver on other critical issues impacting Americans’ daily lives. Republican false attacks fail to dissuade Americans from supporting the bill, as it remains popular even after negative attacks.

“Washington has never been more broken, and that’s why the American people want the For the People Act to be passed into law,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “The For the People Act will get dark money out of politics and protect the right to vote. It will benefit all Americans regardless of which political party they support. Giving power back to the people will make solving big problems, like delivering COVID relief, lowering the cost of healthcare, and ensuring people’s wages can pay the bills, a reality.”

Global Strategy Group and ALG Research surveyed 1,271 battleground state voters in Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin from February 9-15, 2021. The margin of error is +/- 2.7%.

The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) has become a centerpiece of the Democratic agenda in Congress following the 2018 and 2020 elections when Democrats took and held the House and won back the Senate running on a platform of cleaning up corruption and unrigging the system in Washington. ECU and LAV have been leading the charge to pass this bold package of anti-corruption, voting and ethics reforms, working with candidates and elected officials to make pro-democracy reforms a top priority and encouraging Americans to demand that their congressional representatives pass the bill.

Over the last several years, ECU has advocated for the passage of the For the People Act through a nationwide grassroots campaign, paid communications, and partnerships with allied groups, candidates, and members of Congress. H.R. 1 has now been co-sponsored by every House Democrat two congressional sessions in a row. The Senate Democratic majority has also designated the legislation S. 1, the caucus’ first bill of the new Congress.
