New Polls: For the People Act (HR.1/S.1) Extremely Popular in West Virginia and Arizona

May 17, 2021

79% of West Virginians and 84% of Arizonans support the critical voting rights and ethics reform bill

New polls, commissioned by End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund and conducted by Global Strategy Group and ALG Research, show that the For the People Act (H.R. 1, S. 1)––which would protect Americans’ freedom to vote, stop billionaires from buying our elections, and put in place ironclad ethics reforms––is extremely popular in West Virginia and Arizona.

The polls found that 79 percent of West Virginia voters and 84 percent of Arizonans support the For the People Act including strong support from Republicans and Independents.

In West Virginia, a traditionally red state, 76 percent of Republicans and 79 percent of Independents or unaffiliated voters support the For the People Act. In Arizona, 78 percent of Republicans and 81 percent of Independents or unaffiliated voters support the reform bill.

These numbers are consistent with a recent poll, commissioned by ECU // LAV Action Fund and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) and conducted by Global Strategy Group and ALG Research, that showed that the For the People Act is incredibly popular in key Senate battleground states, with 83 percent of voters across party lines supporting the bill.

Polling results also showed that the For the People Act has strong support amongst groups that traditionally do not lean Democratic. In West Virginia, 76 percent of voters without a college degree supported the bill, including 74 percent of men without a college degree. In Arizona, 83 percent of voters without a college degree, including 80 percent of men without a college degree, were in favor of the For the People Act.

“For too long corporate special interests and wealthy donors have had all of the power in Washington. It’s clear that the American people, from West Virginia to Arizona, want change and believe the For the People Act is the answer,” said ECU // LAV Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “It will reduce the influence of lobbyists and special interests, stop billionaires from buying our elections and protect Americans’ freedom to vote so that everyone’s voice is equally heard. The Senate should listen to the American people and pass the For the People Act now.”

Global Strategy Group surveyed 600 registered voters in West Virginia over live telephone conversations from April 14-18, 2021. The margin of error +/- 4.0%. ALG Research held live telephone and text-to-web surveys of 600 voters in Arizona. The margin of error is +/- 4.0.

The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) passed the House in March, underwent a successful markup in the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration last week, and will soon be brought up for a vote in the full Senate. The critical package of anti-corruption, voting, and ethics reforms that would end dark money, ban partisan gerrymandering, protect our freedom to vote, and stop billionaires from buying elections is a top priority for the Biden Administration as well as the Democratic-controlled Congress. Majority Leader Schumer has repeatedly reminded the Senate that “failure is not an option” when it comes to protecting our democracy, and President Biden has called for Congress to send the bill to his desk “right away.”
