New TX-21 Poll: Highly Competitive District Moving Towards Democrats

Aug 26, 2020

Davis and Roy are tied

Davis takes the lead when voters learn of Roy’s ties to corporate special interests

A new poll of voters in Texas’ 21st Congressional District, commissioned by End Citizens United (ECU) and conducted by ALG Research, shows Wendy Davis and Congressman Chip Roy tied at 46%. Joe Biden is leading President Trump 48-47%. Click here to see the polling memo.

With Joe Biden’s one-point lead over President Trump and 57% of voters believing that the country is headed in the wrong direction, the poll indicates that this highly competitive district is trending blue. The poll also exposes Chip Roy’s vulnerability as a first-term Congressman who won by just two points in 2018 and is still unknown to 42 percent of voters. When voters are informed of Roy’s ties to corporate special interests, Wendy Davis takes the lead 49% to 45%.

“With rapidly growing and diverse populations in Texas, Democrats are in a strong position to win this highly competitive district in November,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Despite the power of the incumbency, Chip Roy lacks name recognition in the district and his deep ties to corporate special interests spell trouble for his campaign. Texans want new, accountable leadership, not a Congressman who only won in 2018 because of support from outside money and corporate PACs. Wendy Davis’ message of rooting out corruption in Washington and putting people first is clearly resonating with voters.”

ALG surveyed 500 likely voters in TX-21 from August 15 – August 20, 2020. The margin of error is 4.4%.

ECU endorsed Wendy Davis in September 2019 and has more than four million members nationwide, including 6,200 in TX-21. The group is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
