End Citizens United responds to being named in No Labels’ bogus letter to DOJ
After facing calls from End Citizens United and others to publicly release their donors and end their spoiler third party campaign, No Labels sent an unprecedented letter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) whining for an investigation into its political opponents. End Citizens United communications director Jonas Edwards-Jenks responded on behalf of the group, which was named in No Labels’ letter:
“No Labels is crying to the DOJ because we dared to question their corrupt motives and call for transparency. No Labels demands to be taken seriously, but everything they do shows how deeply unserious they are. They’re comparing Donald Trump’s insurrection to Senator Fetterman’s shorts, whining to the DOJ about a mobile billboard in Georgetown, and still want us to believe they’re the best hope to save our democracy? One thing is clear: they’re scared of our efforts to expose them because they know we’re right—and we’re not stopping.”
As the Washington Post reported: “The argument that the group puts forward in the letter is untested and unusual for a political group. Efforts to pressure donors, candidates and endorsers from taking various actions are the currency of politics, and courts generally give significant leeway to campaigns to compete publicly and privately for support.”
Last week, End Citizens United joined eight pro-democracy groups in sending a letter to No Labels calling for them to release a list of their donors or face legal action.
