On This Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Senators Must Choose Whether They Will Honor His Legacy

Jan 17, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

“Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to giving every American a voice in our democracy. Typically today is a celebration, and while we do celebrate the life of Dr. King, we must listen to the words of the King family and refrain from celebrating without getting new legislation that will protect our freedom to vote.

“Our nation is once again facing an all-out assault on our voting rights, particularly targeted towards Black Americans. With the Senate set to debate and vote next week on the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, every Senator must consider if they will honor the legacy of Dr. King. Will they be on the side of anti-voter laws that leave millions without access to the ballot box and contribute to the irreversible fall of American democracy, or will they be on the side of Dr. King’s family, civil rights leaders, and the American people by ensuring that every American can make their voices heard in our elections?”
