One Year Later: Corrupt Supreme Court Justices Continue to Dodge Accountability

Apr 05, 2024

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement ahead of tomorrow’s anniversary of ProPublica’s bombshell report on Justice Clarence Thomas’ corruption, which shined a light on the lack of ethics, transparency, and accountability in the Supreme Court:

“It’s hard to believe that it was only one year ago that the deep-rooted ties between Justice Clarence Thomas and Republican billionaire Harlan Crow were brought to light. It’s even harder to believe how little has changed despite the mountain of evidence pointing to a court that is rampant with corruption and lacks any sort of real ethics, accountability, and transparency. If Justice Thomas had any respect for the integrity of the Supreme Court, he would have resigned a long time ago.

“These revelations have been catastrophic on the judiciary, with trust and confidence in the highest court plummeting to all-time lows. We’ve seen the all-out assault on Americans’ freedoms by the billionaire-bought justices since Leonard Leo’s dark money campaign to capture the court. No longer can we rest assured that justice is truly blind and that our justices are strictly adhering to the constitution as their guiding principle. Now, we must consider every relationship, connection, and financial tie between the justices and the cases they hear.

“Worse, instead of heeding calls from millions of Americans to implement an enforceable code of conduct, like Senator Whitehouse’s SCERT Act, the MAGA justices and their Republican apologists in Congress have brushed off every attempt at accountability. In order to rebuild any semblance of trust in the Supreme Court and to root out corruption, Congress must take action now.”

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund has been leading calls for Congress to pass Senator Sheldon Whitehouse’s Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, & Transparency (SCERT) Act. For a list of exposés detailing corruption and the justices’ financial conflicts of interests, click here.
