Passage of Texas Voter Suppression Bill is Dangerous Power Grab

May 07, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the Texas House’s passage of S.B. 7, which restricts vote by mail applications, adds unnecessary and burdensome requirements for people to assist voters who need help in casting their ballot, and increases access for partisan poll watchers, likely leading to more voter intimidation. Hundreds of major national and state corporations, including American Airlines, Unilever, HP, Patagonia, Levis, Salesforce, Microsoft, and other prominent companies, signed a letter opposing the Texas state legislature’s consideration of restrictive voting legislation like S.B. 7.

“This bill will take away Texans’ freedom to vote, especially for communities of color that make up large populations in areas like Harris County. This Georgia style bill is a part of a nationwide, dark money fueled effort to restrict voting rights and hold onto power. We can’t let them succeed.

“It is more important now than ever that the U.S. Senate pass the For the People Act (HR.1/S.1) to fight back against these voter suppression bills being introduced and passed around the country, to limit the influence of dark money on politics, and to establish ironclad ethics reforms to make government more accountable to the people. It’s imperative that the Senate pass this critical bill immediately.”
