Republicans Block Debate on Freedom to Vote; Senate Dems Must Act to Ensure Every American’s Voice is Heard

Oct 20, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after Senate Republicans once again filibustered a critical anti-corruption and voting rights bill, the Freedom to Vote Act:

“Despite widespread support from voters on both sides of the aisle, Republicans have once again cynically blocked debate on a common-sense, popular bill that will protect the voice and vote of every American. Now it is time for Democrats to reform Senate procedures so they can pass the Freedom to Vote Act.

“The Freedom to Vote Act will benefit all Americans, no matter which party they belong to or where they live. It will protect the right to vote, end dark money so that billionaires can’t buy elections, stop partisan gerrymandering to ensure we all have fair representation in Congress, and protect our elections from partisan sabotage.

“Senate Democrats must do whatever it takes to pass this bill, and they must act quickly. If they don’t, we won’t be able to counter the attacks on voters and voting that Republicans are waging across the country. People will continue to lose the power of their vote, and they will be stripped of fair representation. And we won’t be able to hold Washington accountable or responsive to the people.

“The Senate has passed legislation with a majority vote over 160 times since 1969, including for trade deals, to confirm judges, and for corporate tax giveaways. If Republicans can cut taxes for corporations with a majority vote, we should certainly be able to protect the freedom to vote with a majority.”
