Ron Johnson Sides With Gun Lobby Donors Over the Lives of Americans

Jun 27, 2022

Ron Johnson benefited from millions from gun lobby, while voting against the gun violence prevention bill

Last week, Senator Ron Johnson voted against bipartisan legislation to combat rampant gun violence across the country. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act will enhance background checks for gun purchasers younger than 21, direct funding to help states implement red flag laws, and for the first time include serious dating partners in the federal law that bars domestic abusers from purchasing firearms.

“The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is a step forward in protecting our children and families from gun violence and will save thousands of lives,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “Senator Johnson, who has benefitted from millions from the gun lobby and then voted against this commonsense, bipartisan legislation shows that he cares more about his big donors than the lives of Americans. It’s why we must continue to crack down on unlimited corporate spending and hold Republicans like Senator Johnson accountable for siding with special interests instead of the American people.”

Since the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, big money gun groups have spent over $302 million to try to block gun violence prevention measures. Senator Ron Johnson, who is facing a tough re-election this year, has taken millions from gun groups, while voting against the bipartisan gun violence prevention bill. The NRA alone spent $1.2 million to support Ron Johnson.
