Schumer Dear Colleague Letter: Almost One Year After January 6, the Senate Will Take Up Voting Legislation Again

Jan 03, 2022

With the Senate back in session a year after January 6, Majority Leader Schumer announces the body will vote to protect the freedom to vote by MLK Day.

End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement as the Senate returns to session for 2022 and we approach the one year anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol to overturn the 2020 election:

“Our values as Americans are that everyone should have their voice heard and their vote counted, but the violent and deadly attack on our Capitol on January 6th demonstrated how fragile our democracy is, and how close we were to having the will of the voters overturned.

“As Leader Schumer said in a Dear Colleague letter this morning, ‘what happened on January 6th and the one-sided, partisan actions being taken by Republican-led state legislatures across the country are directly linked.’ The faction that attempted to sabotage the last election is already putting in place the pieces to sabotage the next one, including removing trusted local election officials from their posts. They are also passing laws to restrict the freedom to vote and are using extreme partisan gerrymandering to redraw legislative districts and strip voters of fair representation.

“The Senate continues to hold the power to put an end to this. They can pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would ensure that everyone can vote in safe, accessible, transparent elections and that everyone’s vote is counted. That is how the system works best and serves the people, not just the dark money groups and corporate interests calling the shots.

“Our democracy is on the line. The Senate can and must do whatever it takes to protect it. It is time.”
