Sedition Caucus: Marco Rubio Turns a Blind Eye to Deadly Insurrection Ahead of Tough Reelection

May 24, 2021

Senate Republicans, the latest being Senator Marco Rubio, are opposing a bipartisan deal that was cut to create an independent commission to investigate the deadly January 6th Capitol attack. The bill passed in the House 252-175 with 35 House Republicans voting with Democrats. Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell is among 25 Senate Republicans who have already said they will oppose the measure in the Senate.

Why are McConnell and Rubio afraid of a bipartisan commission to give the American people a transparent account of the unprecedented violent attack on our Capitol on January 6th? The answer is simple: they’d rather run on a record of defending sedition to appease Donald Trump than protect our democracy. This comes at the same time as Republicans continue their anti-democratic voter suppression efforts across the country to put up barriers to the ballot box and stop certain people from voting.

Here’s a growing list of Republican Senators who are choosing to defend sedition over doing what’s right for the future of American democracy:

  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

  • Senator John Barrasso (R-WY)

  • Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO)

  • Senator John Boozman (R-AR)
