Senate Democrats Vote to End Dark Money; GOP Protects it with Filibuster

Republicans Continue to Protect Corrupt System, Secret Spending

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement in response to Republicans’ decision to once again block the DISCLOSE Act, legislation that would bring dark money spending into the light.

“We applaud Senate Democrats who sided with the vast majority of Americans who want to end dark money and bring more transparency to politics.

“Billionaires and special interests buying access and influence and blocking progress on so many critical issues. It’s shameful that Senate Republicans sided with these secret donors to protect a corrupt and broken system.

“Americans deserve to know who’s trying to influence their vote and we will continue working with our allies in Congress to get that done.”

The DISCLOSE Act will shine a light on the flood of dark money in elections by requiring organizations that engage in electioneering – including super PACs and 501(c)(4) dark money groups – to disclose the identities of donors who have given them $10,000 or more during an election cycle. The DISCLOSE Act also addresses serious vulnerabilities in the system that currently allow foreign actors to meddle in our elections. This provision requires companies spending money in elections to disclose their true owners, so election officials and the public know who is behind the spending.
