Senate Hearing on D.C. Statehood Important Step Forward For Equal Representation and Voting Rights

Jun 22, 2021

End Citizens United and Let America Vote (ECU//LAV) Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Hearing on D.C. Statehood:

“Thanks to the leadership of Chairman Gary Peters and Senator Tom Carper, the lead Senate sponsor of the Washington, D.C. Admission Act (S.51), America moved one step closer to ensuring equal representation for all Americans and enfranchising the nearly 700,000 Americans living in Washington, D.C.

“As Chairman Peters noted, America was founded on the principle of no taxation without representation. However, the nearly 700,000 citizens, many of whom are Black and brown Americans, living in the District of Columbia have no say in which laws govern them, what federal taxes they are required to pay, when their military members are sent to war, and which judges preside over their federal courts. As the Senate’s focus turns to voting rights, we urge Senators to pass the Washington, D.C. Admission Act and give the residents of Washington, D.C. a voice in their democracy.”
