Senate Republicans’ unanimous vote to block a bill to keep the country from defaulting on its debts shows how Republicans continue to play political games with the filibuster.
After abusing the filibuster to block a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly January 6 insurrection and to block legislation to end dark money, protect the freedom to vote, and stop partisan gerrymandering, Republicans are now playing reckless political games by abusing the filibuster to crash the U.S. economy. If the country defaults, the consequences would likely be catastrophic, potentially costing 6 million Americans their jobs and sending our economy into a tailspin.
“Senate Republicans have shown time and time again that they are willing to abuse the filibuster to put their political interests ahead of the country, this time threatening to shut down the government and harm the U.S. economy,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “The fact that Republicans are willing to abuse the filibuster to crash the economy is proof that they are not acting in the best interests of the American people. The Senate is soon going to need to reform the filibuster in order to make Congress work.”
