Setting The Record Straight: The Republicans Deriding Dark Money Are Responsible For Our Country’s Dark Money Problem

Mar 21, 2022

Democrats have introduced the DISCLOSE Act in every session of Congress since 2010; Republicans have blocked the bill every single time

As Democrats work to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, Senate Republicans are resorting to hypocritical attacks around dark money to smear her candidacy. But the fact is, the current campaign finance system, which allows billionaires and corporate special interests to spend unlimited money without any transparency, is a direct result of the Republican Party’s refusal to join Democrats in passing the DISCLOSE Act.

Since 2010, when the Supreme Court gave rise to big money in the Citizens United decision, Democrats have introduced the DISCLOSE Act in every session of Congress to shine a light on dark money. The DISCLOSE Act would end dark money by requiring any organization that spends $10,000 or more on campaign expenditures to file a disclosure report with the Federal Election Commission within 24 hours of purchase. For over a decade, the Republican Party has blocked the DISCLOSE Act, including five times in the last year alone.
