Special Interests Have Chosen Their Candidate in Michigan: Tom Barrett

Nov 15, 2021

Today, Michigan State Senator Tom Barrett announced he is running for Congress in Michigan against Representative Elissa Slotkin. A self-serving politician, Barrett has been the worst of Lansing politics, and he would be the worst of Washington. Barrett is bankrolled by partisan and corporate special interests–almost 90% of the campaign money Barrett has received comes from political and corporate PACs including from insurance companies and oil and gas interests.

Throughout his political career, Barrett has consistently fought for his corporate donors instead of Michigan families. During his time in the State Senate, he voted to allow corporate-funded dark money groups to hide from transparency and accountability, voted with his corporate funders to increase gas prices, and voted against a minimum wage increase to put more money in the pockets of Michiganders.

“Tom Barrett is nothing but a shill for corporate and partisan special interests. His voting record shows that his only interest is serving the special interests, while making it harder for hard-working Michiganders to make ends meet by raising their gas prices and denying them fair wages,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “Michiganders don’t need Barrett to bring his brand of self-serving partisan politics to Washington. They need a strong, independent voice who fights against corruption like Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, who doesn’t take corporate PAC money and fights against special interests to strengthen Michigan’s middle class and build up Michigan’s small businesses.”

Since being elected to Congress, Rep. Slotkin has followed through on her promise to return power to Michiganders by twice cosponsoring and voting for anti-corruption legislation that gets dark money out of politics so billionaires and corporate special interests can no longer buy our elections. Slotkin refuses to accept corporate PAC money in her campaign, making her one of the few in all of Congress to do so.
