Statement from ECU President in Support of Honest Ads Act

Oct 19, 2017

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement in support of the Honest Ads Act introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar, Mark Warner and John McCain.

“When foreign countries are permitted to funnel secret money to corrupt our democracy, Americans are left without a voice. We shouldn’t be complacent following Russia’s attempt to influence our election through social media and online ads. The lack of disclosure for these ads made them even more dangerous.

“While too many sit idly by, Senators Amy Klobuchar, Mark Warner and John McCain are working to prevent further infiltration from foreign governments through their Honest Ads Act. This is common sense legislation and senators from both parties should support this bill to ensure that our elections are free from foreign interference. ECU will ensure those who oppose this effort and allow foreign governments to continue to exploit our system will be held accountable next November.”

In support of the Honest Ads Act, ECU is launching a petition to show grassroots support for the bill among its three million members. In one of its most recent efforts, ECU’s Advocacy Action Network collected 43,000 signatures calling for an independent investigation into Russian efforts to rig the 2016 election.

End Citizens United has repeatedly warned about vulnerabilities in our campaign finance system that allow for foreign money to flow into our elections.
