Despite the renewed focus on corporate America’s influence over politics following the deadly assault on the United States Capitol Building–incited in part by eight Republican Senators–top corporations in the fossil fuel industry are hoping their contributions to the Senate seditionists go unnoticed.
The eight Republican Senators include: Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA), Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY).
“The insurrection at the Capitol left a deep wound in our democracy, and as we try to overcome that sad day as a nation, we must hold everyone accountable. These fossil fuel corporations, motivated by protecting their profits, funded the eight senators who voted to overturn the election results without any regard to the dangerous rhetoric they were spewing. The only way these fossil fuel companies can prove they are against sedition and treason is to demand a refund of their donations from these Senators. So far, their silence has been deafening,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller.
While some corporations have cut off or asked for refunds from members of Congress who attempted to overturn the election results, and some have engaged in a PR stunt by “pausing” all contributions, many top fossil fuel corporations have yet to take any action, hoping this blows over and that things will return to business as usual.
Below is a list of some of the top corporations in the fossil fuel industry that have given to the eight senators over the course of their careers and have yet to pause their contributions or demand refunds.
