Republicans’ platform has become even more anti-voting over the years and their abandonment of the Voting Rights Act is evidence that the Senate must reform the filibuster to protect the freedom to vote
On Monday, every member of the House GOP voted against the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4), which would restore key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to their full strength. 24 of those House Republicans voted for the Voting Rights Act when it was renewed with overwhelming support in 2006.
“These 24 Republicans rightfully voted to protect voting rights 15 years ago, but flipped their vote and sided with the anti-voter sentiment that has overtaken today’s GOP,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller. “This is further proof that the Republican Party of 2021 has become severely out of touch with the American people, and they have no interest in protecting the freedom to vote in any way, shape, or form. As the Senate begins consideration of this bill, they must reform the filibuster to pass it. We cannot continue to allow the attack on the right to vote being waged in the states stand, and inaction by the Senate cannot be an option.”
