To Address Gun Violence, We Must Pass the For the People Act

May 27, 2021

As we grieve for the victims of yet another horrific mass shooting, this time in San Jose, California, Americans are once again desperately calling on Congress to pass commonsense and incredibly popular gun safety measures that would save lives. But many Washington politicians are so beholden to the NRA and the gun lobby that they continue to offer only “thoughts and prayers” while they vote against reforms like universal background checks that over 4 in 5 Americans support.

The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) would ban dark money and empower small donors to decrease the influence of special interest groups and lobbyists so corrupt organizations like the NRA could no longer block popular gun safety legislation by spending millions of dollars a year on lobbyists and political donations.

“How many people have to needlessly die for Congress to finally summon up the courage to stand up to the NRA and gun lobby and act? Enough is enough,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “It’s clear that until we pass the For the People Act and return power to regular Americans, the NRA and gun lobby will continue to exploit our broken and corrupt system in Washington to block any meaningful reform, no matter how necessary or popular.”
