Transplant Turmoil: Another Bad Week for the GOP’s Out-of-Touch Senate Wannabes, Part 24

Aug 23, 2024

Trump’s Project 2025, fact-checks, and killing privacy legislation

Welcome to another edition of Transplant Turmoil—the weekly series spotlighting the ways Republican carpetbaggers continue to prove themselves as out-of-touch with the state they’re running in.

“No amount of money can hide the fact that these wealthy carpetbaggers are bad candidates who are prioritizing their self-enrichment over voters,” said End Citizens United Spokesperson Grace Silva. “People can see through their extensive lies and know that their extreme agenda only benefits their own pockets and their corporate benefactors. Come November, these out-of-touch, out-of-state candidates will realize that money can’t buy grassroots support or a Senate seat.”

Here’s what the GOP’s out-of-touch candidates have been up to:

#WISen: California Bank Owner Eric Hovde Lying About Bank’s Role in Nursing Home Lawsuit

  • When it was revealed that Eric Hovde’s California bank was being sued in a wrongful death lawsuit from a nursing home, his campaign claimed that his bank didn’t actually manage the nursing home so he held no responsibility. Instead, they stated a third-party managed the facility. Yet, newly obtained documents revealed that Hovde’s Sunset Bank “shall possess the exclusive right to control, manage, and direct” the nursing home’s business and affairs. This raises even more eyebrows about his shady business practices and the financial records that Hovde is determined to hide from voters.
  • Hovde was recently asked how he plans on appealing to Wisconsin women after pointing out both Senator Tammy Baldwin and Vice President Harris are women candidates and may pull support. Instead of answering the question, or making any attempt to draw women voters in, Hovde awkwardly said, “It’s just not my way..if I don’t have something good to say about somebody, I don’t say it.” The gaffe itself is uncomfortable, but paired with his previous comments condemning women for having children out of wedlock and not understanding reproductive medication, it’s clear that Hovde hasn’t given much—if any—thought to Wisconsinite women.
  • In his attempt to shift the conversation away from his sketchy finances, Hovde has spent his campaign lying about Senator Baldwin’s record. Most recently, he claimed that she “has done absolutely nothing” about the fentanyl crisis. However, this claim was rated ‘False’ in a local fact-check, citing the senator’s work in addressing the opioid abuse, including her cosponsorship of several pieces of legislation. Senator Baldwin has spent her time in Washington fighting for the people and none of Hovde’s lies can take away from her record—and Wisconsinites know that.

#NVSen: Scam Brown Financially Connected to Trump’s Project 2025

  • Though Republicans try to distance themselves from Trump’s Project 2025, the money trail doesn’t lie. According to Federal Election Commission data, Sam Brown has received at least $50,000 in campaign contributions from several leaders connected to Project 2025. This includes a $3,000 donation from America First Policy Institute chair Linda McMahon, who was recently appointed to oversee Trump’s transition team, and a $6,000 contribution from Timothy Dunn, the oil tycoon and Trump mega donor who serves as vice chair of the Texas Public Policy Foundation. His connection to Project 2025 just proves that his current campaign platform—which includes his extreme anti-abortion stance, calls to repeal the Affordable Care Act and dismantle the Department of Education—are only the beginning. A vote for Scam Brown is a vote for Project 2025.

#PASen: Connecticut Hedge Fund Millionaire Dave McCormick Lies about Senator Casey’s Record

  • In a desperate attempt to pull attention away from his failing campaign, Dave McCormick is throwing out any lie about Senator Bob Casey’s record in the hopes that it sticks. Recently, McCormick tried to claim that Senator Casey called to ban fracking outright. But a recent fact-check proved that this is a blatant lie. Not only has Senator Casey never called to ban fracking, but has stated that he would fight any proposed bans in the Senate. He has shown, time and time again, he will always protect Pennsylvanians’ energy industry and the jobs that come along with it. McCormick’s lies don’t hold up under scrutiny and voters see right through him.
  • A new op-ed from a Pennsylvania resident and former steelworker was published in Keystone Newsroom, slamming McCormick’s record. The op-ed detailed the Connecticut millionaire’s history of putting corporate profits over workers and his pattern of laying off local employees to then outsource the jobs. The author finishes by writing, “The choice we have before us this November is obvious. We can’t trust David McCormick to have the backs of Pennsylvania workers.”

#MTSen: Wannabe Cowboy Millionaire Tim Sheehy Helped Kill Drone Privacy Legislation

  • During his time at Bridger Aerospace, Tim Sheehy worked behind the scenes to kill drone privacy bills in Montana’s state legislature to allow him to profit off of his development and contracting of drone technology to the federal government. Around the same time, Bridger Aerospace was using drones from the Chinese tech company DJI, which admitted in 2016 that it was complying with the Chinese government to hand over data collected by its drones. In 2017, Sheehy emailed multiple state senators, pressing them to “drop the pursuit of the anti-drone legislation.” Sheehy has, and will continue, to put his own self-enrichment over protecting Montanans’ privacy.
