VA Republicans Vote to Protect Corruption

Feb 02, 2023

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement reacting to the Virginia House Republicans voting down bills that would curb the influence of dark money in Virginia politics:

“Virginia House Republicans stood strong yesterday–for their wealthy dark money backers, and for corrupt politicians to use their positions of power to line their own pockets. The extremist GOP Caucus voted against common sense measures to protect our democracy and stop corruption like ending dark money and preventing politicians from pocketing their campaign money for personal use. They even blocked a bipartisan proposal to ban foreign companies from interfering in Virginia elections. This is exactly why people are losing faith in the system.

“The people of Virginia deserve better. Their leaders should make it clear that they work for them, not for their dark money allies or the highest bidder.”

The bills Virginia Republicans voted down yesterday:

  • HB 1551, which would end dark money in Virginia elections.

  • HB 1552, which would prevent politicians from spending campaign funds on personal expenses.

  • HB 1648, which would ban foreign entities from influencing elections in Virginia.
