What’s the Hold Up? Cornyn Stalls on Returning Illegal Campaign Contributions

Feb 06, 2020

Cornyn, a Big Money 20 incumbent, has yet to return $10,000 in illegal contributions after his campaign told reporters in November of 2019 he would return the donations to the U.S. Treasury

ECU-endorsed candidate MJ Hegar has made campaign finance reform a cornerstone of her campaign

In fall of 2019, James Dannenbaum, a major donor of Senator John Cornyn’s (R-TX), admitted to violating federal election law by illegally coordinating hundreds of thousands of dollars of straw campaign contributions from his employees. Senator John Cornyn, who received $10,000 of these illegal contributions, told reporters he would return the donations to the U.S. Treasury but has yet to do so.

“From corporate PAC checks to illegal contributions, Senator Cornyn hasn’t seen a campaign check he doesn’t take. Senator Cronyn said he would return the illegal campaign contributions. So what’s the hold up? Taking illegal donations and then lying to Texans won’t sit well voters,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller.

ECU’s Big Money 20 campaign is focused on holding incumbents who benefit most from the corrupt establishment in Washington accountable by showing voters how politicians put corporate special interest donors ahead of the people they’re supposed to represent.
