Why Are McCarthy and McConnell Afraid of Bipartisan January 6th Commission?

May 20, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the House’s measure to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol attack. The bill passed in the House 252-175 with 35 Republicans voting with Democrats, despite Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s opposition after a bipartisan deal was cut to meet most of his demands. Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell said he would oppose the measure in the Senate.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi has passed a bipartisan bill to create a commission to give the American people a transparent account of what happened to our democracy on January 6th. Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s opposition to the commission is pure cowardice and partisan politics. What are they afraid of?

“The American people have a right to the truth and an accurate account as to exactly why this unprecedented attack on our Capitol happened. McCarthy and McConnell working to sink the commission, despite bipartisan support and it including most of their own demands, is a cowardly attempt to avoid any accountability for spreading the Big Lie that led to the deadly insurrection.”
