End Citizens United (ECU), a grassroots campaign finance reform organization, today inducted Representative Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) to its inaugural list of ‘Most Corrupt’ politicians running for reelection. The initiative is aimed at exposing and defeating the most egregious perpetrators of corruption in Washington.
“Representative Ciscomani’s time in Congress has been a total failure,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “His legislative accomplishments are non-existent and he’s proven to be part of the problem by being a rubber stamp for Republican extremism. Instead of working to improve the lives of Arizona families, he’s been entirely focused on doing the bidding of the big donors who bought his seat for him and the corporate special interests that are funding his reelection. We’re going to hold him accountable by exposing his corrupt record and engaging with voters through Election Day to make sure they know just how corrupt he is.”
Without question, Ciscomani owes his seat to his allies who drew the district in favor of Republicans, and the dark money-funded super PACs that spent $6.5 million in order to buy the seat for him. Ciscomani is in Congress because of them and works solely for them. His legislative record is limited to advancing his rich donors’ interests, voting to cut enforcement against illegal tax cheats and opposing tax hikes on the wealthiest Americans. Ciscomani has already taken more than $400,000 from corporate PACs during his first term in office and has quickly championed their agenda, voting for Big Oil’s deregulatory agenda.
Ciscomani was on the board of Patriot Academy, an extreme right-wing political training organization that seeks to dismantle our democracy and create a Christian nationalist country. Patriot Academy is in a “life and death struggle to rewrite the Constitution—and teaching its supporters how to defend themselves with a handgun, just in case.”
ECU will highlight Ciscomani’s record of corruption and will work to engage voters and the media between now and Election Day, including in a new digital video released today.
ECU is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. Since its founding in 2015, the group has had over 1 million donors and raised $200 million, with an average donation of just $14. The group has more than 4 million members nationwide.
