Following news that the Justice Department charged former president Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the 2020 election, End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement:
“We commend special counsel Jack Smith and the Justice Department for holding Donald Trump accountable for his heinous crimes.
“While justice is being served, the ringleader of the criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election is still the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, and election deniers are still seeking power in states across the country. On top of that, MAGA Republicans—emboldened by Trump—have introduced their election-denier wishlist in the ACE Act, which would severely restrict Americans’ access to the ballot box.
“The threats to our democracy persist, and they remain a top concern for voters. That is why we need to continue to confront them, just as the prosecutors have done today.
“Safeguarding the freedom to vote is fundamental to preserving our democracy. Congress must pass national standards, like the Freedom to Vote Act, so attacks on this sacred freedom never come to fruition. If we don’t pass these commonsense measures, election denialism will take root in our country.”
