Comey Hearing Reaffirms Need for Independent Commission

Jun 08, 2017

Congressionally Established Independent Commission is Necessary to Investigate Russia’s Influence on U.S. Elections, Possible Trump Campaign Collusion with Russian Agents

End Citizens United President and Executive Director Tiffany Muller released the following statement on former FBI Director James Comey’s troubling allegation that he was fired because of the Russia investigation.

“Former FBI Director James Comey’s allegation that he was fired because of the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s interference is troubling, disturbing and damning evidence that President Trump abused the power of the office and sought to obstruct justice. It leaves open the very real concern that this administration through the Department of Justice may put pressure on Special Counsel Robert Muller and compromise this investigation.

“ECU will continue to call on Congress to set up an independent commission to get to the bottom of how Russia influenced our election and whether the Trump campaign might have colluded with Russian agents to rig the election.. The American people deserve to have faith restored in their government without the thumb of this administration on the scales of justice.

“Russia’s ability to interfere with our elections exposes a gaping vulnerability in our democracy, risking our economic and national security. Reports that Russian agents bought ads to influence public opinion during the election serve as a reminder that loopholes in our law allow foreign money into our elections. It is imperative that Congress act immediately to close these loopholes in our campaign finance system to secure our elections.”
