ECU Applauds 221 Cosponsors of HR 1

Jan 10, 2019

Leadership of House Freshmen Puts Sweeping Reform in Reach

End Citizens United (ECU) today praised House Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes and the 221 original cosponsors of HR 1, the For the People Act, legislation that will end the dominance of big money in politics, protect the right to vote, and ensure officials are working in the public interest. The list of initial cosponsors includes 55 members of the freshman class.

“We applaud Speaker Pelosi, Rep. Sarbanes, and all of the original cosponsors of the For the People Act for their leadership in creating a political system that’s accountable to voters, not special interests,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United. “In 2018, candidates around the country campaigned on fighting corruption in Washington and the strong support for the For the People Act, especially from new members, begins to deliver on that promise. We look forward to working with these leaders and our four million members to pass the most sweeping package of democracy reforms since Watergate.”

ECU and its four million members played a central role in helping its endorsed candidates run grassroots-powered campaigns and use the issue of reform to win. ECU organized a letter in October, signed by three-quarters of the incoming class, demanding reform be the first item on the agenda in the new Congress. ECU also led the movement among candidates to forgo corporate PAC money in their campaigns. Fifty members of the 116th Congress are refusing to take corporate PAC money in their campaigns, including 36 new members.
