Tipirneni is taking on corruption by rejecting corporate PAC money
Rep. Schweikert, a Big Money 20 incumbent, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee and has taken over $1.2 million from corporate PACs
In 2018, ECU raised nearly $200,000 in small-dollar donations for Tipirneni’s AZ-08 campaign
End Citizens United (ECU) today endorsed Hiral Tipirneni for Congress in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District. Tipirneni is highlighting her commitment to reform by running a people-powered campaign and rejecting money from corporate PACs. Tipirneni’s opponent, Rep. David Schweikert, faces multiple allegations of corruption by the House Ethics Committee and has taken over $1.2 million from corporate PACs over the course of his political career. In 2018, ECU raised nearly $200,000 in just four weeks for Tipirneni’s campaign with an average contribution of $8.
“Hiral Tipirneni is a true reformer who will fight corruption in government and bring much-needed reform to Washington,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “While her Republican opponent, Rep. David Schweikert, has spent the past year under investigation for using taxpayer dollars to benefit his own campaign, Hiral Tipirneni is rejecting money from corporate PACs and proving to Arizona families she’ll work only for them in Congress. ECU is proud to stand with Hiral Tipirneni, and we look forward to helping her win in 2020.”
“The current House Ethics Committee investigation into David Shweikert proves that Washington is in need of reform,” said Hiral Tipirneni. “Arizonans are tired of Washington’s corruption, and that’s why I’m committed to running a grassroots-funded campaign. As I work to expand Medicare access, create an economy that works for everyone, and run special interests out of Washington, I am honored to have the support of End Citizens United. I look forward to working alongside ECU to guarantee that all Arizona families have a voice in Congress.”
End Citizens United recently named the first round of 12 incumbents to its “Big Money 20” list for the 2020 cycle, including Rep. David Schweikert. The Big Money 20 campaign aims to educate voters about incumbents who represent the worst of Washington and rally support for reforming the political system. The members of the Big Money 20 are incumbents who take money from corporate special interests, mega-donors, and industries like Big Pharma and Big Oil and then put those interests ahead of their constituents.
During the 2018 election cycle, ECU spearheaded the movement among candidates to forgo corporate PAC money in their campaigns. In the 116th Congress, nearly 60 members are refusing to take corporate PAC money, which includes 27 members of the House freshman class who flipped their district.
ECU is dedicated to getting Big Money out of politics and fixing the rigged system in Washington so government works for all Americans. The reform group has four million members nationwide, including 11,000 in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
