End Citizens United Files Complaint Against Tina Ramirez in VA-07

Ramirez breaks law by failing to file personal financial disclosure

Washington, D.C. – End Citizens United (ECU) today filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) against Tina Ramirez, candidate in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. The complaint states that Ramirez has not filed a personal financial disclosure with the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives as required by law.

“Tina Ramirez is already breaking the rules of the office she’s running for,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “By failing to file this basic disclosure requirement, she’s keeping Virginia voters in the dark about any potential conflicts of interest. The public deserves more transparency, not less. The Office of Congressional Ethics should review this immediately and hold Ramirez accountable.”

The Violation:
The Ethics in Government Act of 1978, as amended, requires candidates for Congress to file annual financial disclosure reports within thirty (30) days of becoming a candidate for Congress, as defined in the Federal Campaign Act of 1971.  5 U.S.C. app. § 101(c).

Ms. Ramirez raised well in excess of the $5,000 candidate threshold more than 30 days ago.  Therefore, she is required to file a personal financial disclosure report. Notwithstanding this obligation, Ms. Ramirez did not file her financial disclosure report and consequently did not disclose any of her income, as required by law.  Without this disclosure, the public is deprived of valuable information regarding Ms. Ramirez’s potential conflicts of interest.
