End Citizens United: New Democratic Agenda Puts Money-in-Politics Front and Center

Jul 24, 2017

ECU President and Executive Director Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the new agenda unveiled today by Senate and House Democrats, ‘A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future.’

“The Democrats’ bold message is an important first step for success in 2018. For too long, the system has been rigged against everyday Americans. Our democracy has been sold to the highest bidder and in its wake working families have been left behind. Americans deserve a system that works for them, not the special interests.

“Right now, American jobs are being shipped overseas, prescription drug costs are rising and wages are stagnant – all because the special interests control Washington. But we can’t fix our economic issues without also unrigging an unfair system. ECU is fighting back against the unlimited, undisclosed money corrupting our democracy. Americans deserve a better deal and we’re committed to fixing a broken system so we can get there.”

New polling from Hart Research shows an overwhelming amount of voters in Senate battleground states agree that the economy is rigged against them (79%), with more voters agreeing that the rigged system is the problem than “big government spends too much, taxes too much and puts too many burdens on businesses.”

ECU is a grassroots-funded organization that is dedicated to electing members of Congress who will fight to overturn Citizens United and pass campaign finance reform that will remove unlimited, undisclosed money from our political system. In the 2016 election cycle, ECU’s grassroots members displayed their strength, raising $25 million from 300,000 donors with a $14 average contribution. Founded two years ago, today the group has over three million members.
