End Citizens United Statement on Ninth Anniversary of Citizens United

Jan 21, 2019

End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the ninth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision:

“In the nine years since the Supreme Court put a for sale sign on our elections, our democracy has been rigged to favor corporate special interests and mega-donors. It’s corrupting the system and diminishing faith in government.

“Special interests have been emboldened to spend unlimited and often undisclosed sums of money to advance their agendas at the expense of American families. The flood of money in politics is at the core of Washington’s failure and inability to work in the interest of all Americans.

“But the winds of change are blowing. The midterm elections were a testament to the vigor and passion Americans have for reforming the system. With the introduction of the For the People Act, House Democrats are delivering on campaign promises to unrig the system and restore power in our democracy to the people.

“On this anniversary, as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and his dream of creating a more just and equal country, we rededicate ourselves to taking back our democracy from the grips of big money special interests. The integrity of our elections and the strength of our democracy depends on it.”
