End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the below statement following the Mueller report’s confirmation of Russian agents exploiting loopholes in campaign finance laws to influence the 2016 election:
“The Mueller report confirms that the organized campaign aimed at influencing the 2016 election by Russian agents was an assault on our democracy. The report underscores serious vulnerabilities and glaring loopholes in our campaign finance system that allow secret money to infiltrate our elections — and the problem remains unresolved.
“The American people deserve the truth. Attorney General Barr’s statement this morning is inconsistent with the substance of this damning report. From redacting information to painting a picture that there was no wrongdoing, Barr proved that he would rather serve the President’s agenda than offer an open and transparent assessment of the facts. The magnitude of hostile Russians meddling in our elections cannot be understated.
“Congress must act now and enact sweeping legislation, like the For the People Act, to prevent this type of egregious attack from ever happening again. Republicans who oppose these reforms have some serious soul-searching to do. They need to decide whether giving big donors and corporate special interests outsized influence is worth the risk of giving hostile foreign entities backdoor access to our democracy.
“Elections are the bedrock of our democracy, and they deserve our utmost protection. Any politician who opposes these critical reforms will be held accountable.”
