Following Public Pressure, FEC Votes to Consider More Disclosure for Political Spending

Nov 16, 2017

FEC must enact stronger disclosure rules to prevent foreign entities from influencing elections
ECU members submitted over 2,300 comments with the FEC calling for stronger disclosure requirements

WASHINGTON, DC — On the heels of a record number of comments submitted to the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) by End Citizens United (ECU) and nearly a dozen good government groups, the FEC has opened its rulemaking process regarding digital political ad disclosure. More than 150,000 signatures were submitted to the FEC to address the issue.

“Americans across the country deserve credit for sparking action at the FEC. Today’s vote to open the rulemaking process is a promising first step, but the American people aren’t looking for promises,” said Tiffany Muller, president of ECU. “We hope the FEC takes those comments seriously and strengthens disclosure rules for political spending. Our grassroots members will continue to push for more disclosure in the rulemaking process as well as through legislation. Americans deserve to know who’s behind the torrent of money that’s trying to influence their votes. The integrity of our elections and the strength of our democracy depends on it.”
