End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Rep. Doug Collins’ opening remarks today at the House Judiciary Committee’s hearing on H.R. 1, the For the People Act:
“It’s no surprise that Representative Collins, an entrenched member of Washington’s rigged system, is opposed to H.R. 1. As he spewed lies about the bill today, his pockets were bulging with money from big money special interests that keep him in Congress. H.R. 1 is once-in-a-generation legislation aimed at ending the dominance of big money in politics, expanding and protecting the right to vote, and giving everyday people a bigger voice in our elections. By standing against these reforms, he’s going against the will of the American people.”
The For the People Act is borne out of the 2018 midterm elections that saw a majority of Democrats run on a platform of cleaning up corruption and unrigging the system in Washington. The comprehensive bill would restore voting rights, safeguard the integrity of elections, reform ethics laws, and end the dominance of big money in politics. In October, ECU organized a letter, signed by three-quarters of the incoming class, demanding reform be the first item on the agenda in the new Congress.
