McConnell, Tillis and Corporate Special Interests Behind Super PAC Meddling in NC Primary

Feb 24, 2020

Poll shows North Carolina U.S. Senate Demcoratic candidate Cal Cunningham leading incumbent Republican Sen. Thom Tillis by 2 points

Cal Cunningham is rejecting corporate PAC money while Thom Tillis has taken nearly $1 million from corporate PACs in the 2020 cycle alone and over $2.5 million throughout his career

A corporate-funded super PAC with ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), spent millions of dollars in advertisements to meddle in the North Carolina U.S. Senate primary. SLF funneled millions of dollars to a shady Republican super PAC so that vulnerable incumbent Thom Tillis doesn’t have to face Cal Cunnigham in the general election. The effort comes after a January poll found Cal Cunningham leading incumbent Repbublican Senator Thom Tillis by two points.

“Mitch McConnell and his corporate special interest friends are rushing in to save the day for Thom Tillis because they’re terrified about running against Cal Cunningham. It reeks of desperation,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Cal Cunningham is the strongest candidate to defeat Thom Tillis and take on the corporate special interests. Cal isn’t taking a dime of corporate PAC money and that’s why Thom Tillis, Mitch McConnell, and the corrupt Washington establishment is so afraid to face him in November.”

End Citizens United (ECU) endorsed Cal Cunningham in July 2019 because of his commitment to fight corruption and making Washington work for North Carolinians. Cunningham, who rejects donations from corporate PACs, is running a grassroots campaign power by small-dollar donors. As one of his first major policy announcements, Cunningham unveiled a bold and comprehensive agenda to rein in the influence of special interests and crack down on corruption in Washington.

In January, End Citizens United Action Fund released its first annual legislative scorecard that tracked and graded the efforts of every member of Congress on money in politics and government reform issues. Senator Thom Tillis received an “F” for failing to support common sense legislation that roots out corruption, increases transparency, and strengthens ethics in government.
