Rep. Rodney Davis Tries to Silence FEC Chairwoman Concerned About Illegal Conduct

Oct 11, 2019

Davis’ letter begs the question: Does Davis believe foreign interference in American elections is OK? Would he solicit foreign help to get re-elected?

Davis voted against the For the People Act (H.R. 1), the most sweeping anti-corruption and ethics legislation since Watergate

Rep. Rodney Davis (IL-13) wrote a letter attempting to silence Federal Election Commission Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub after she expressed concern over President Trump illegally soliciting the help of a foreign country to investigate his political rivals.

Davis’ attempt to silence Weintraub comes after the Chairwoman publicly spoke out with concerns regarding President Trump’s urging for foreign interference in U.S. elections. Davis, a Big Money 20 incumbent, voted against the For the People Act (H.R. 1), the most sweeping piece of anti-corruption and ethics legislation since Watergate that included provisions to strengthen election security. ECU has endorsed Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, who is rejecting corporate PAC money, for Illinois’ 13th Congressional District.

“Rep. Rodney Davis’ accusations against FEC Chairwoman Ellen Weintraub are unfounded and yet another example of the extent he’s willing to go to protect Washington corruption,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Interference by a foreign power in U.S. elections undermines our democracy and threatens the integrity of our elections. Does Rodney Davis really believe that soliciting foreign interference in American elections is OK? It is well within Chairwoman’s Weintraub’s official duties as chair of the Federal Election Commission to publicly comment on President Trump’s conduct. Rodney Davis wants to silence Weintraub to distract from his own corrupt record in Washington.”

End Citizens United aims to educate voters about the Big Money 20, incumbents who represent the worst of Washington, and rally support for reforming the political system. The members of the Big Money 20 are incumbents who take money from corporate special interests, mega-donors, and industries like Big Pharma and Big Oil and then put those interests ahead of their constituents.
