Sen. Mitch McConnell Blocks Vote to End the Dominance of Big Money in Politics

Oct 30, 2019

End Citizens United Action Fund released the following statement on Senate Republicans’ refusal to allow a vote on the For the People Act (H.R. 1), House-passed legislation that would end the dominance of big money in politics, restore ethics and accountability, and make it easier to vote.

“Whether it’s his refusal to take up bills to lower drug prices, reduce gun violence, or the For the People Act which would end the dominance of big money in politics, Sen. Mitch McConnell has repeatedly done the bidding of his wealthy donors at the expense of the American people,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United Action Fund. “The For the People Act is a popular, commonsense bill that would strengthen our democracy, and it deserves a vote in the Senate.”

In March, the House passed H.R. 1, the most sweeping package of democracy reforms since Watergate. Its Senate companion bill, introduced as S. 949 by Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), has the support of every member of the Democratic caucus.

Last week, Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the bipartisan Honest Ads Act (S. 1356), legislation aimed at increasing transparency of online political advertisements. Sen. McConnell has also refused to allow a vote on the SHIELD Act (H.R. 4617, S. 2669) and the SAFE Act (H.R. 2722, S. 2238), House-passed bills that would protect our elections from foreign interference and shore up our voting systems.
