End Citizens United/Let America Vote Condemns Greg Abbott for Prioritizing GOP’s Political Agenda Amid Texas Flood Recovery

WASHINGTON, DC — Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United/Let America Vote, issued the following statement in response to news that Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called a special legislative session on congressional redistricting just days after the devastating loss of life from the catastrophic flooding in Texas. The redistricting effort is reportedly under direct pressure from Donald Trump’s political team to blunt the anticipated electoral impact of the Republican billionaire tax giveaway on the backs of working families:

“This is a blatant partisan power grab by Republicans desperate to avoid the electoral fallout of slashing health care and food assistance for millions of Americans to pay back their billionaire backers for hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign contributions in 2024. The timing of this shameful attempt to rig congressional maps and silence voters couldn’t be more disgraceful.

“While families across Texas are facing unimaginable loss and destruction in the wake of last week’s catastrophic flooding—a tragedy that has claimed more than 100 lives with nearly 200 Texans still missing—Greg Abbott is diverting the state legislature’s attention away from recovery efforts to advance Washington Republicans’s corrupt political agenda in a desperate attempt to keep control of Congress. It’s a stark and damning reflection of their misplaced priorities amid unimaginable suffering and a betrayal of the millions of Texans who are counting on real leadership in this moment of crisis.”
