End Citizens United and Let America Vote Action Fund today sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in support of the For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1). The letter emphasizes that Washington has never been more broken and now is the moment to restore our democracy. ECU and LAV’s advocacy has played a pivotal role in making the For the People Act––a bold package of anti-corruption, voting, and ethics reforms––the first legislative priority for the House and Senate majorities.

The letter reads:
“On behalf of End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund and our more than four million members around the country, we fully support passage of the For the People Act (H.R. 1) and are committed to doing everything we can to ensure it is signed into law.
“Far too many Americans across the political spectrum believe their government no longer works for them. They see wealthy special interests dictating policy, politicians setting the rules for their own elections and making it harder for Americans to vote, and federal officials profiting off the public interest. The For the People Act is critical to restoring the public’s faith in our democratic institutions and ensuring everyone’s voice and vote is heard, counted, and protected.

“The American people voted in record numbers for pro-reform majorities in Congress and a president who believes our democracy works best when every vote is counted and every voice is heard. Congress must deliver on this mandate by passing the comprehensive reforms in the For The People Act to ensure our democracy works for all of us, not just wealthy special interests.”
The For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 1) has become a centerpiece of the Democratic agenda in Congress following the 2018 and 2020 elections when Democrats took and held the House and won back the Senate running on a platform of cleaning up corruption and unrigging the system in Washington. ECU and LAV have been leading the charge to pass this bold package of anti-corruption, voting and ethics reforms, working with candidates and elected officials to make pro-democracy reforms a top priority and encouraging Americans to demand that their congressional representatives pass the bill.
Over the last several years, ECU has advocated for the passage of the For the People Act through a nationwide grassroots campaign, paid communications, and partnerships with allied groups, candidates, and members of Congress. H.R. 1 has now been co-sponsored by every House Democrat two congressional sessions in a row. The Senate Democratic majority has also designated the legislation S. 1, the caucus’ first bill of the new Congress.
