Arizona has been at the epicenter of the GOP’s efforts to subvert and sabotage our elections. The outcome of the Secretary of State race will have grave consequences for Arizona and the whole country. It’s not an exaggeration – it’s a fact.
Before Mark Finchem takes stage tonight and spews his wild conspiracy theories, we want to remind everyone about who he is and what he stands for.
Finchem is an extremist and conspiracy theorist who threatens the democratic process in Arizona:
-
Finchem was part of the mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6th. As the attack was underway, he tweeted a photo of the mob with the hashtag #stopthesteal and the caption: “What happens when the People feel they have been ignored, and Congress refuses to acknowledge rampant fraud.”
-
He is a self-proclaimed member of the Oath Keepers, an anti-government militia that took part in the 2020 insurrection.
-
He continues to deny the 2020 election results and works with insurrectionists across the country, promoting Trump’s Big Lie.
-
Finchem has introduced laws that would make ballots public record in addition to a bill that would allow the state legislature to reject election results.
“A secretary of state’s main responsibility is to carry out the laws under the Constitution and ensure that elections are fair, accessible and transparent—not to peddle false conspiracy theories and use the office to enact their own agenda,” said ECU / LAV President Tiffany Muller. “Mark Finchem is the antithesis of what it means to be a secretary of state. He’s a conspiracy theorist who has made it abundantly clear that he will put his party and his self-interest above the will of the voters. Finchem is a grave threat to our democracy and we look forward to Adrian Fontes exposing who he really is tonight.”
