Today, ahead of the third anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund hosted a virtual press call to articulate the ongoing threats MAGA extremism presents to our democracy in 2024.
Tiffany Muller, End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President, was joined by Representative Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Ranking Member of the House on Oversight and Accountability, and Representative Jason Crow (CO-06).
“There’s been a concerted effort to minimize, legitimize, and normalize the violent insurrection to not only maintain Trump’s MAGA support, but to empower him to exact revenge on our democratic norms if he were to return to power,” said Muller. “We know Trump’s plan—and it wouldn’t be a one-off attack like January 6—it would be a four year methodical and vicious assault on our institutions, our rights and our freedoms. And don’t take my word for it—Trump himself has promised to be a dictator on Day One, promised to pardon January 6 attackers, and to wield the power of federal law enforcement against political enemies.”
“It is our historic assignment to defend democracy—but defending democracy is not just defending a static framework of existing laws and regulations,” said Rep. Raskin. “It certainly is that, and we must defend it against Donald Trump and Trumpism. But democracy is always an unfinished project, a project in motion, and an historical process.”
“We’re asking people to stand up and to show some political courage to end this MAGA extremism and this political violence and this corrupting influence on our democracy that continues to pervade,” said Rep. Crow. “We’re calling for a new American patriotism to show that courage now, and going forward, to help us win this battle for our democracy and to end this political extremism that’s gripped our country.”
