End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Ayanna Pressley’s win in the Massachusetts-07 primary:
“Last night, Ayanna Pressley, an incredible champion of Massachusetts families, became the latest candidate rejecting corporate PAC money to win her primary and advance to the general election. So far this cycle, 116 no corporate PAC candidates have made it to the ballot in November.
“During a time when faith in government is at an all-time low and the news is littered with stories of scandals and corruption, Pressley’s victory proves once again that voters are hungry for candidates who will take bold steps to unrig the system. Her decision to reject corporate PAC money demonstrates to Massachusetts families that she will put their interests ahead of corporate donors.
“Congratulations to Ayanna on her victory. We look forward to working with her in Congress to pass real reforms to get Big Money out of politics so that Congress can focus on the business of the American people.”
As Politico Playbook noted this morning, the move to forgo corporate PAC money is the type of movement that could upend the system in Washington.
“THIS IS A LOT LIKE 2010 … People are being swept into Washington to completely turn upside down a party, and how it does business. Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Pa.), Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley — three of the most prominent Democratic stars of this cycle — are ideologically different, but share one common thread: They all wouldn’t take corporate PAC money — the kind of donations that power incumbent members of Congress, and the party committees. It might seem gimmicky, but this is the kind of position that could change how Washington works.”
