As we stand at the precipice of yet another consequential election year, the future of our democracy hangs in the balance. With former President Donald Trump looming over the political landscape, the urgency to safeguard our electoral integrity has never been more pressing. Now is the time for action, for unity, and for unwavering commitment to the principles upon which our nation was founded.
In this pivotal moment, one state shines as a beacon of hope: Colorado.
Amidst the chaos of partisan divides and the pervasive influence of big money in politics, Colorado’s Democratic representatives and senators have emerged as champions of democracy, earning recognition from End Citizens United for their steadfast dedication to the cause.
In End Citizens United’s most recent scorecard, which grades members of Congress on their support for important anti-corruption and voting rights measures, all of Colorado’s Democratic representatives, including both Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, received an A or higher. This remarkable achievement is a testament to their ongoing commitment to the people they serve and our democracy.
It’s important to recognize the Colorado delegation for their commitment to democracy. Congressman Jason Crow, a trailblazer in his own right, spearheaded the no corporate PAC movement, setting a precedent for principled leadership. Alongside him, Congressman Joe Neguse, Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo, and Secretary of State Jenna Griswold have demonstrated a fierce dedication to protecting our elections and combating the corrosive influence of big money. Their collective efforts have earned Colorado the highest accolades, ranking it as the top state in the nation on protecting democracy. This collaborative and shared commitment to democratic principles underscore the strength of Colorado’s representation.
Bennet and Hickenlooper, in particular, deserve our utmost gratitude and admiration for their exemplary leadership in defending our democracy and their resolute stance against the corrosive influence of corporate PACs. By refusing to accept money from corporate PACs, they have demonstrated a profound dedication to representing the interests of the people, rather than the narrow agendas of special interests looking to buy access and influence in order to pad their bottom lines.
But make no mistake: The stakes have never been higher. In an era marked by disinformation, voter suppression tactics, and the unabashed pursuit of power at any cost, the very foundations of our democracy are under siege. If we fail to elect leaders who are relentless defenders of democracy, we risk surrendering our most cherished rights and freedoms to the whims of a few wealthy elites.
The consequences of inaction are dire. Without vigilant guardians of democracy in positions of power, we risk sliding further down the slippery slope towards oligarchy, where the voices of the wealthy drown out the cries of the marginalized and disenfranchised. We risk losing faith in the promise of democracy itself, as cynicism and apathy take root in the hearts of Americans who feel abandoned by their elected representatives.
But there is hope. In the actions of Bennet and Hickenlooper, we find a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. Their deep conviction to upholding the freedom to vote and combating the corrupting influence of big boney in politics sets a powerful example for leaders across the nation.
As we embark on this critical journey to safeguard our democracy, let us take inspiration from the principled leadership of Bennet and Hickenlooper. Let us stand united in our commitment to protect the sanctity of our elections and ensure that every voice is heard. Together, we can build a future where democracy thrives, free from the shackles of big money and undue influence. The road ahead may be long and arduous, but with leaders like Sens. Bennet and Hickenlooper leading the way, I am confident that we will emerge stronger, more resilient, and more united than ever before.
