End Citizens United (ECU) and Let America Vote (LAV) today endorsed Senator Maggie Hassan for reelection. A fierce critic of the disastrous Citizens United ruling, Sen. Hassan has a proven track record of fighting to root out secret special interest money in our political system.
“Senator Hassan understands that the voices of New Hampshire families are drowned out when a handful of billionaires and special interests are able to shell out unlimited and undisclosed sums of campaign money to control legislative outcomes,” said ECU/LAV President Tiffany Muller. “That’s why throughout her career she has proven to be a champion of common sense reforms to shine a light on the flood of dark money in politics and supporting efforts to undo the impact of the disastrous Citizens United decision. Senator Hassan’s leadership is an integral part of why the For the People Act is the top priority in the Senate. We’re proud to endorse Senator Hassan and we look forward to helping her win.”
“No one does democracy better than New Hampshire, and I am proud to fight to ensure that corporate special interests never overpower the voices of Granite Staters,” said Senator Maggie Hassan. “We need campaign finance reform now to stop billionaires from buying our elections and end the flood of dark money interests trying to control our politics. My focus is on getting big money out of politics so that our democracy can deliver for New Hampshire’s hard-working families.”
Throughout her career, Sen. Hassan has been outspoken about the need for reforming the broken campaign finance system and protecting voting rights. She has repeatedly called for overturning Citizens United and signed a letter to the SEC Chair in 2017 emphasizing the need for corporate spending disclosure. In the New Hampshire State Senate, Sen. Hassan sponsored an amendment that would require a company’s board of directors to approve political spending. In the U.S. Senate, she has co-sponsored a number of reform bills, including the For the People Act, Democracy for All Amendment, DISCLOSE Act, Spotlight Act, and Honest Ads Act. She also voted to ensure transparency for groups and companies that may engage in political spending but try to hide their donors.
ECU and LAV have been active and engaged in New Hampshire in recent election cycles. ECU’s first-ever U.S. Senate endorsement was Senator Maggie Hassan’s U.S. Senate campaign during the 2016 cycle. ECU was also instrumental in helping Congressman Chris Pappas win NH-01 in 2018, and holding it in 2020. Let America’s grassroots team helped turn both the state House and Senate blue in 2018 by knocking on more than 80,000 doors.
End Citizens United // Let America Vote is dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money and attempts to block access to the ballot box. ECU led the effort to flip the House in 2018 by supporting pro-reform candidates that stood up to Big Money and corporate special interests. In 2020, ECU merged with Let America Vote, a grassroots organization that is fighting to protect all Americans’ right to vote, and played a pivotal role in electing pro-democracy Senate candidates that helped flip the chamber. ECU // LAV has more than four million members nationwide, including 43,000 in New Hampshire, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
