Golden ran his first campaign as a clean elections candidate, repeatedly defended clean elections as a state legislator
End Citizens United (ECU) today endorsed State Representative Jared Golden in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.
A staunch advocate for transparency and accountability, Golden qualified as a clean elections candidate when he first ran for the Maine State Legislature. During his time in the legislature, Golden served on the committee that handles Maine’s election laws, and repeatedly defended the state’s clean election system to curb the influence of unlimited and undisclosed special interest money in Maine.
Golden is also highlighting his commitment to reform by disavowing support from all secret donors and rejecting corporate PAC money in his campaign. ECU encourages candidates to reject money from corporate special interests and has identified over 100 candidates this cycle who are making a similar commitment.
“Jared Golden is a committed reformer who has a real record of working to limit the influence of Big Money in Maine,” said ECU President Tiffany Muller. “By rejecting corporate PAC money, he’s proving that he’s accountable to the hardworking people in his district — not corporate special interests. Maine families can trust Jared to go to Washington and fight for them. We’re proud to endorse him and look forward to helping him win in November.”
“I am proud to earn the support of End Citizens United. Campaign finance reform begins by holding ourselves to a higher standard, and demanding greater transparency and accountability in our elections.” said Jared Golden, candidate for Maine’s 2nd District. “I pledge to reject support from secret donors and money from corporate PACs, and I will continue fighting to reform our broken campaign finance system.”
The endorsement will help Golden compete with big-spending special interest groups by connecting him with its more than 8,700 grassroots members in ME-02, as well as its national network of 400,000 small-dollar donors.
ECU is an entirely grassroots-funded organization dedicated to electing members of Congress who will fight to get Big Money out of politics so Congress focuses on all of us and not only its biggest special interest donors. In 2015, ECU supported the Maine Clean Elections Initiative.
